Hair loss affects approximately 80 million Americans, and the causes of hair loss range from genetics to side effects from medications. While we can’t control all of the factors contributing to hair loss, we have a few hair loss prevention tips that can keep your hair looking thicker and fuller for longer.
Diet
Healthy diets containing raw veggies and fresh herbs may reduce the risk of female and male pattern baldness, known medically as androgenic alopecia. Eating a diet high in eggs, nuts, beans, fish, chicken, turkey or other proteins can also reduce the chance of developing androgenic alopecia.
Supplements
If you can’t change your diet for whatever reason, you can take supplements to help stave off hair loss. One of our hair loss prevention tips is to take multivitamins containing vitamins A, B, C, D, iron and zinc. All of these vitamins are integral to hair growth and retention. Be sure to consult a physician before taking any supplements.
Hair care
The way you treat your hair can go a long way when it comes to how to prevent hair loss. Regular washing with a mild shampoo may protect against hair loss by keeping your scalp healthy and clean. You may also want to switch up your styling routine and avoid chemical treatments that can damage your hair and scalp.
Medications
Over-the-counter drugs like Rogaine and prescription pills like Propecia can help slow hair loss and promote new growth. However, these treatments are not for everyone. Pregnant women, for example, should avoid Propecia. Consult with your doctor before taking any drugs for your hair.
Medical treatments
Laser therapy and platelet-rich plasma injections are two of the medical treatments that can help stimulate hair growth. But just like with medications, you should always speak to your physician before undergoing any hair restoration treatment.
Essential oils
Lavender, lemongrass and peppermint have been studied as treatments for the hair loss condition alopecia areata. Try mixing in a few drops of these essential oils with a carrier oil like jojoba and applying it to your scalp a few minutes before washing.
Onion juice
Scientists aren’t exactly sure how it works, but onion juice is a possible treatment for alopecia areata. The possible cure may be linked to the onion’s sulfur content.
Massage
A scalp massage feels amazing, and it may be able to help promote hair growth. A 2016 study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information showed some improvement in hair growth with a daily four-minute massage over the course of two years.
Yoga
Stressful life events can cause a hair loss condition known as telogen effluvium—and, as anyone who practices yoga will tell you, yoga is a great stress-relief method. Downward facing dog, forward bend, camel pose, shoulder stand, fish pose and kneeling pose are a few easy poses that can relieve stress.
