Balding: Myth vs. Fact

For men and women with bald or balding family members, the threat of hair loss may loom over them their entire lives. There is a lot of misinformation about balding that can cause unnecessary stress. Since we assist people suffering from hair loss every day with hair replacement in Greensboro, NC, we’ve compiled the truth behind some of these commonly-discussed balding myths.

Only men experience balding

When you think of balding, you largely think of men with completely hairless heads, which leads people to think that only men can go bald. But this is not correct!

Androgenic alopecia is the most commonly discussed form of balding because it is largely permanent, and can affect both sexes through male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. Both men and women can suffer from other types of hair loss equally, as well.

Balding only happens when you’re old

Baldness is largely believed to be an elderly person’s affliction, which is extremely untrue. Although the chances of baldness increase with age, particularly for women after menopause, many young people are shocked to discover hair loss at an early age.

For men and women predisposed to balding, hair loss can begin as early as their teens, and many other people begin experiencing hair loss in their twenties or thirties.

Wearing hats too often can make you go bald

A lot of people think that wearing a baseball hat or beanie every day can cause baldness. Science does not support this claim, particularly since androgenic alopecia is genetic.

Wearing extremely tight hats can lead to traction alopecia, or hair loss caused by excessive pulling on the hair, but it is both unlikely and temporary.

The gene for baldness runs on your mother’s side

It’s said that the gene for baldness runs on your mother’s side, but this is only partially true. The androgen receptor (one of the signals for hair loss) was believed to be inherited on the X chromosome, which you would inherit from your mother. However, experts now know that there are other genes that can be linked to hair loss that can come from both the mother and the father.

Balding is permanent

Androgenic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss, is genetically linked and permanent. However, that doesn’t mean all types of hair loss are permanent.

Other forms of hair loss can be temporary, including traction alopecia, alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease) and telogen effluvium (a form of hair loss caused by stress).

There’s no way bald people can enjoy healthy hair again

If you suffer from a permanent form of hair loss like androgenic alopecia, you may be discouraged to know there is no cure. But this does not mean you are destined to be hairless forever!

There are many other methods of hair replacement in Greensboro, NC, such as hair follicle transplants or non-surgical hair replacement procedures.
